The installation HomeLand is an exhibition of a collection of soil (Land) samples. A great number of participants offer samples that they have collected from the place each one of them considers his/her country of origin, his/her homeland (Home). The samples, using the ancient rammed-earth technique, are molded and casted into the recesses of the wall that divides Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki and the Fοlklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace, and remain there as permanent exhibits. “The project’s central goal is to bring citizens of all social groups in contact with the primal and symbolic materiality of the soil ” The project’s central goal is to bring citizens of all social groups in contact with the primal and symbolic materiality of the soil (ground), to introduce them, through experiential workshops, to the process of earth-ramming and casting, and at the same time to create a website that hosts the relevant information and data, functioning as a universal interactive communication channel (portal). The project is an invitation to return to the idea of “homeland” as a variation to Arcadia, a place of peace and tranquility, and a return to the primordial. This invitation to engage with the geographical and geological history (affective geography), via the establishment of a universally open-ended sampling, captures the symbolic interaction of the participants with the memory of the place (human geography). The work, as multilevel crossroad of real and spiritual meetings, constitutes a geo-sociopolitical encounter and aims towards distilling the metaphysical meaning of soil and transfuse it from the ideological foundation of the theory of the masses to everyday human practices. Visually, the soil’s heterogeneous color shades, condensed in the wall’s recesses, compose a gigantic mosaic in earth tones referencing Thessaloniki’s byzantine tradition. The wall’s transformation into a topographic map is used as a vehicle between the metaphysics of “dedication” and physical “mortal” substance, between the spiritual and the material. The archival activity does not aim to create an outdoors installation offered to public view, but a multilevel aesthetic experience. It is also a toolbox for (social, ethnological, anthropological, geological) research, since the creation of a communication mechanism and a call for participants addressed to Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki’s collaborators, citizens, institutions and the city’s wider public activates a universal network related to the identity, origin and lineage of the offering/donation. The wall ceases to be a blind boundary and becomes a portal, a door to the world. The 4600 samples gathered from the participants in conjunction with the additional digital material and the workshop experience form an original material meta-object, which can constitute an open field for future research in various areas of humanities and sciences.

Η εγκατάσταση HomeLand αποτελεί εκθεσιακή παράθεση μίας συλλογής δειγμάτων χώματος (Land), το οποίο μεταφέρουν/προσφέρουν ένα πλήθος συμμετεχόντων από χώρους που θεωρούν ως χώρο καταγωγής/πατρίδα (Home). Τα δείγματα χώματος, μέσω της πανάρχαιας τεχνικής υγρής σύνθλιψης (ramming), πακτώνονται (molding) και εγκιβωτίζονται (casting) ως μόνιμα εκθέματα στις εσοχές (φατνώματα) του τοίχου που χωρίζει το συγκρότημα του Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki από το Λαογραφικό και Εθνολογικό Μουσείο Μακεδονίας-Θράκης. “Κεντρικός στόχος του έργου είναι η επαφή διάφορων κοινωνικών ομάδων με την αρχέγονη και συμβολική υλικότητα του χώματος” Κεντρικός στόχος του έργου είναι η επαφή διάφορων κοινωνικών ομάδων με την αρχέγονη και συμβολική υλικότητα του χώματος (εδάφους), η γνωριμία και εργαστηριακή εμπειρία με την διαδικασία χύτευσης και εκμάγευσης και, συνάμα, η κατασκευή ενός διαδυκτιακού χώρου που φιλοξενεί τα σχετικά στοιχεία λειτουργώντας ως πανανθρώπινος διαδραστικός δίαυλος επικοινωνίας (portal). Το έργο αποτελεί πρόσκληση επιστροφής στην ιδέα της «γενέθλιας γης» ως μια διαφορετική εκδοχή της Αρκαδίας ως τόπου ηρεμίας και γαλήνης, και επανόδου στο αρχέγονο. Αυτή η πρόκληση διαλόγου γύρω από την γεωγραφική και γεωλογική ιστορικότητα (affective geography), διαμέσου της συγκρότησης μιας διεθνούς εμβέλειας δειγματοληψίας, αναδεικνύει τη συμβολική αλληλεπίδραση των συμμετεχόντων με τη μνήμη του τόπου (ανθρωπογεωγραφία). Το έργο, ως πολυεπίπεδο σταυροδρόμι πραγματικών και νοερών συναντήσεων, αποτελεί γέω-κοινωνικοπολιτική συνεύρεση και στοχεύει να αποστάξει τη μεταφυσική νοηματική του χώματος και να την μεταγγίσει από την ιδεολογική θεμελίωση της βιοθεωρίας του πλήθους σε πρακτική του καθημερινού ανθρώπινου βίου. Σε οπτικό επίπεδο, οι ετερογενείς χρωματικές αποχρώσεις του χώματος, όπως συμπυκνώνεται στα φατνώματα του τοίχου, συνθέτει ένα γιγάντιο ψηφιδωτό γήινων αποχρώσεων με αναφορές στην βυζαντινή παράδοση της Θεσσαλονίκης. Η μεταμόρφωση του «τοίχου» σε εδαφολογικό χάρτη χρησιμοποιείται ως όχημα ανάμεσα στη μεταφυσική του «αναθήματος» και τη φυσική «θνητή» υλική υπόσταση, ανάμεσα στο πνευματικό και το υλικό. Η αρχειακή δραστηριότητα δεν προτίθεται να κατασκευάσει μνημείο κοινής θέασης στον εξωτερικό χώρο, αλλά μια βιωματικά πολυεπίπεδη αισθητική εμπειρία. Αποτελεί ταυτόχρονα και εργαλειοθήκη για έρευνα (κοινωνιολογική, εθνογραφική, ανθρωπολογική, γεωλογική), καθώς η οργάνωση ενός μηχανισμού επικοινωνίας και πρόσκλησης συμμετοχής προς συνεργάτες του Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki, πολίτες, οργανισμούς και το ευρύτερο κοινό της Θεσσαλονίκης θα ενεργοποιήσουν ένα παγκόσμιο δίκτυο σχετικά με την ταυτότητα, προέλευση και καταγωγή της δωρεάς. Ο τοίχος σταματά να είναι ένα τυφλό όριο και γίνεται portal – μια πύλη, πόρτα στον κόσμο. Τα 4600 δείγματα που θα συγκεντρωθούν από τους συμμετέχοντες, σε συνδυασμό με το συμπληρωματικό ηλεκτρονικό υλικό, αποτελούν ένα πρωτότυπο υλικό μετά-αντικείμενο που προσφέρει ανοιχτό πεδίο για μετέπειτα έρευνα σε πολλούς τομείς των ανθρωπιστικών και θετικών επιστημών.
