Ι root around in the branches of the fig tree. If I was the first to deliver the news of the ripe figs they called me a liar; they said I shouldn’t stick my nose into someone else’s business. Growing figs played an important role in the nutrition of the population while it was also a principal export. Prior to WWII figs made up a considerable percentage (around 20%) of the value of exported agricultural products. In modern Greece, in 1908, cuttings were imported from the area of Smyrna and were later distributed to farmers in the area of Messinia. Due to their high content of natural fibres figs can be very useful to people with constipation issues. The wild fig tree is a monocotyledonous tree with its inflorescence carrying both male and female flowers. In ancient times they used to feed figs to pets. This resulted in the etymological kinship of the words fig and liver in modern Greek. Coming in contact with the milk of the fig tree can result in intense itching.

Ανασκαλεύω τα κλαδιά της συκιάς. Αν έλεγα πρώτος την είδηση ότι τα σύκα της χρονιάς είχαν ωριμάσει με έλεγαν συκοφάντη και πως χώνω τη μύτη μου στην ιδιωτική ζωή των άλλων. Η καλλιέργεια της συκιάς έπαιζε σημαντικό ρόλο στην διατροφή του πληθυσμού, αποτελώντας βασικό εξαγώγιμο προϊόν. Πριν τον Β’ ΠΠ αντιπροσώπευε το 20% της αξίας των εξαγόμενων αγροτικών προϊόντων. Στη σύγχρονη Ελλάδα έγινε εισαγωγή μοσχευμάτων από την περιοχή της Σμύρνης το 1908, τα οποία μοιράστηκαν σε αγρότες της Μεσσηνίας. Λόγω της υψηλής περιεκτικότητάς τους σε φυτικές ίνες, τα σύκα μπορούν να δώσουν τη λύση σε ανθρώπους που ταλαιπωρούνται από δυσκοιλιότητα. Η άγρια συκιά (αρρενοσυκιά) είναι δένδρο μόνοικο, διότι οι ταξιανθίες του περιέχουν και αρσενικά και θηλυκά άνθη. Στην αρχαιότητα τάιζαν τα οικόσιτα ζώα με σύκα. Έτσι προέκυψε η ετυμολογική συγγένεια των λέξεων σύκο και συκώτι. Η επαφή με το γάλα της συκιάς δημιουργεί πολύ έντονη φαγούρα.
